John M. Stogner

John Stogner, Ph.D. is an associate professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at UNC Charlotte. Dr. Stogner also holds an appointment as an associate professor of Public Policy and is president of the Southern Criminal Justice Association. His teaching and research generally focuses on substance use with the primary emphasis being novel and emerging drug issues. He also explores criminological theory, biosocial criminology, quantitative methodology, and the interplay between issues of health and deviance.

Dr. Stogner graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina State University, earning a bachelor's degree in zoology and a bachelor's degree in psychology, and later received a Ph.D. in Criminology, Law, and Society from the University of Florida. Dr. Stogner’s research has appeared in journals such as Pediatrics, Alcohol and Alcoholism, Addictive Behaviors, Justice Quarterly, and the Journal of Criminal Justice. He authored "The Nature and Theory of Crime" and is a co-author of "Emerging Trends in Drug Use and Distribution." His work has been covered by popular outlets such as the L.A. Times, the Baltimore Sun, Yahoo, Fox News, and CBS’s The Doctors. Dr. Stogner has also discussed emerging drug issues on U.S. and Canadian television news stations.
