Biography:

Nowlan Freese was awarded a Ph.D. in 2013 in Biological Sciences from Clemson University where he studied genetic pathways that specify the size and shape of the vertebrate tailbone. Freese joined the Loraine genome visualization lab in 2014 as a postdoctoral researcher where he led outreach and training efforts for the Integrated Genome Browser (IGB) project. In 2015, Freese was awarded a three year National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biology studying the relationship between DNA methylation and alternative splicing. In 2018, Freese transitioned to the position of Research Associate at UNC Charlotte where he led a team of masters students to complete the BioViz Connect project. Freese is now a research assistant professor focused on expanding the Integrated Genome Browser.
